Three legacy files in real government formats, with real defects: cryptic code lists, a superseded severity scale, a misused column, a duplicate, a bad value. "How mouldy is this home?" arrives in three encodings across these files. Each is declared as its own measure of the same DNA meaning. None is flattened into another.

Nominal · trade codeA job code PLA110 is a plastering job raised FOR a damp wall. The code becomes the meaning damp_and_mould, once.
Ordinal · statutory scaleA hazard band HHSRS band C: a RANKING on the A-to-J scale (replaced by Low/Medium/High on 23 June 2026; A to C = Category 1).
Narrative · a resident's wordsFree text "Black spots on the bedroom wall again and the baby coughs at night." Kept as narrative, beside the numbers, never crushed into them.
Technology DNA knows the difference between a ranking and an amount. Rankings refuse arithmetic that lies: no sums, no averages of hazard bands. The scale lives on the concept itself, as data:
